An American Army officer is recruited by the yet to exist Israel to help them form an army. He is disturbed by this sudden appeal to his Jewish heritage. Each of Israel's Arab neighbors has vowed to invade the poorly prepared country as soon as partition is granted. He is made commander of the Israeli forces just before the war begins.

After a brilliant career with the US army, WWII hero and Jewish American Mickey Marcus (Kirk Douglas) is called to the new state of Israel to build an army capable of withstanding it?s Arab foes. Against the wishes of his wife (Angie Dickinson), Mickey makes the journey and begins transforming a ragtag underground army into a first-class fighting machine. But, as the threat of war looms, Mickey must also confront his growing attraction to beautiful activist Magda Simon (Senta Berger). also stars John Wayne, Yul Brynner, James Donald, Topol, Frank Sinatra, Strathis Giallelis and Luther Adler. directed by Mellville Shavelson.

about formation of modern ISRAEL. I didn't even know about this movie until watched part of it 6-2017. This movie came out a year before the '67 6 Day War. All star cast!" Hot Senta Berger: looked a lot like UFC Gina Carano. Sinatra, Kirk Douglas, John Wayne, Yul Brenner, Angie Dickenson This movie has not aged well, but I'm giving it 3 stars for good intent. It wouldn't be made today.

This is one of those great Hollywood epics they don't make anymore. I saw it a Jewish film festival and it's an interesting movie to reflect upon the birth of Israel. Cast a Giant Shadow tells the story of Mickey Marcus who as an American officer and lawyer who helped to create the Israeli army and also served as their first general. Of course they had to sex up the story for Hollywood but still their's great acting all around especially by John Wayne who was rarely better than he was here.
