Boden and Fleck are low-key American neorealists, and in Captain Marvel they barely retain a vestige of their signature style. Yet they have brought off something exciting, embracing the Marvel house style and, within that, crafting a tale with enough tricks and moods and sleight-of-hand layers to keep us honestly absorbed.

If you throw away all this controversy surrounding this movie, you'll get one of the weakest additions to MCU. I don't read Marvel comics, so I'm judging purely as a cinematic experience. Story and villains are weak and forgettable. Captain Marvel lacks charisma and experiencing wild mood swings from stone face killer to snarky joker. Acting is sub-par and action scenes are passable. Samuel.L.Jackson and the Cat is there only for some comic relief. Scarlet Witch, Wasp or Black Widow solo films would've been much more interesting. Captain Marvel is simply boring and you won't lose much if you skip that one.
