Call Me Lucky (2015)

An inspiring, triumphant and wickedly funny portrait of one of comedy's most enigmatic and important figures, CALL ME LUCKY tells the story of Barry Crimmins, a beer-swilling, politically outspoken and whip-smart comic whose efforts in the 70s and 80s fostered the talents of the next generation of standup comedians. But beneath Crimmins' gruff, hard-drinking, curmudgeonly persona lay an undercurrent of rage stemming from his long-suppressed and horrific abuse as a child – a rage that eventually found its way out of the comedy clubs and television shows and into the political arena.

With a dedication to Robin Williams, this honest portrait of Bobcat Goldthwait's friend and contemporary Barry Crimmins re-introduces the piss and vinegar of Crimmins' stand-up assault and successfully summons the things that haunted him on and off stage. In a way, Goldthwait's inaugural documentary carries through it a very clear vision of the ugliness of human compulsion and the poisonous nature of the vices of celebrity and those who are infatuated with it. But at it's core Goldthwait goes to great lengths to explore the survivalist spirit and humanitarianism of his friend Barry Crimmins.

It is a well-constructed, sincere portrait of the not-well-known-enough Crimmins; It is funny until it punches you in the face when it turns to its darker subject matter, much like Crimmins' on-stage performances.

Bobcat Goldthwait's hand too nervously tempers Crimmins's outré tactics as kooky showmanship bred from unimaginable trauma.

Mike D'Angelo 05 Aug 2015

Goldthwait stays behind the camera, but his long personal history with Crimmins provides him with access that no other filmmaker would likely have been able to get, given how ferociously the man guards his privacy.

You may never see a more excruciating nonfiction drama about a comic's comic.
