Broadway Danny Rose (1984)

A hapless talent manager named Danny Rose, by helping a client, gets dragged into a love triangle involving the mob. His story is told in flashback, an anecdote shared amongst a group of comedians over lunch at New York's Carnegie Deli. Rose's one-man talent agency represents countless incompetent entertainers, including a one-legged tap dancer, and one slightly talented one: washed-up lounge singer Lou Canova, whose career is on the rebound.

Woody at his best! "We're in a situation here. A definite situation here. Like, a definite type of a situation here!" He's the worst showbiz agent in the world but I'd hire his acts.

I just loved this Woody Allen movie - and laughed (to tears) the whole way through. He's the best story-teller and this was such fun story. I particulary liked his character of Danny Rose in this film. One of my favorite roles of his. Mia Farrow is smashing in this and nearly unrecognizable behind her huge sunglasses she wears through most of the film. There is a sweetness and gentleness about this one that's endearing. I highly recommend.

Broadway Danny Rose proceeds so sweetly and so illogically that it seems to have been spun, not constructed. Mr. Allen works with such speed and confidence these days that a brief, swift film like this one can have all the texture and substance of his more complicated work.

One of my two favorite Woody Allen movies, from his great early '80s period. A very big movie in a very small package. Its ending is in competition with City Lights for the best romantic ending to a film ever. I have never watched it without tears coming to my eyes, and I am as hard-boiled as they come. "Acceptance, forgiveness and love...now that's a philosophy of life."
