Just saw this on tv the other night. ADORED it. But I think anything Steven Fry touches is golden.

Stephen Fry perfectly captures England and the decadent partying lifestyle that the young generation enjoy. Wild parties, plenty of drinking and cocaine (a.k.a. naughty salt), and the hapless hero's on again off again engagement to the girl of his dreams all revolving on money. Adam Symes's fortunes go up and down since his novel, on which is career and future is based, is confiscated at customs. Jim Broadbent gives the most colorful performance as the drunken major who is entrusted with 1000 pounds of Symes's so he can bet it on a long shot at a horse race. Stephen Campbell Moore, himself a lookalike of a young George VI, does well as Adam. Though Waugh's novel was set in 1930, it showed that he predicted the next war Britain would have to go through--the movie makes it clear that it's World War II. One of the best novel-based movies I've seen in a long time.

From my first encounter with Stephen Fry once the 1990 "Jeeves and Wooster" came to PBS I've enjoyed him. Then Hugh Laurie showed up on one of the few TV shows we've liked that has lasted. BYT is Fry's first directing effort. It is funny, sad and romantic, if the sale of a friend can be romantic. The cast is great, with the older generation played by stars one knows, including O'Toole trying out for his role in "Venus." The young things were apparently less known, but are excellent (Emily Mortinmer, Stephen Campbell Moore, James McAvoy, Michale Sheen and Fenella Woolgar.)

It shows what writers go through to get to get books published

Loved Emily Mortimer and Stephen Campbell Moore. A time in England I felt we were always trying to get back to in our college's GCR. An ultimately sweet, deep movie.
