What a superb film. Throughout it feels like "you can take the girl out of the village but you cannot take the village out of the girl" but then, right at the end that is completely demolished. This works on may levels, the loss of a parent in childhood although there is nothing to indicate the nature of the relationship between the sisters and the mother. The loss of childhood through an arranged marriage, the loss of a child, a son, in a traditional Muslim marriage. The impact of settlement in a foreign country and the difficulties that all immigrants face when trying to be successful. Above all there is the assessment of the nature of the impact of terrorist attcks, causing some to retreat into religious fundamentalism and others to reassess their situation. I have watched this beautiful film several times and there are still implications, nuanced and not that can be drawn from it. It begs the question as to whether or not the author intends to write the other side of the story...about the sister who remains in Bangladesh. Highly recommended.
