Bread and Roses (2000)

Maya is a quick-witted young woman who comes over the Mexican border without papers and makes her way to the LA home of her older sister Rosa. Rosa gets Maya a job as a janitor: a non-union janitorial service has the contract, the foul-mouthed supervisor can fire workers on a whim, and the service-workers' union has assigned organizer Sam Shapiro to bring its "justice for janitors" campaign to the building. Sam finds Maya a willing listener, she's also attracted to him. Rosa resists, she has an ailing husband to consider. The workers try for public support; management intimidates workers to divide and conquer. Rosa and Maya as well as workers and management may be set to collide.

A collection of small, heroic acts that lead the characters and the audience to a greater knowledge of yet another injustice.

A somewhat bittersweet story with a genuine feel to it and many wonderful humorous moments...the kind of story which enables the viewer to observe others...as if they were looking upon themselves in a strange bout of lucidity. I was very impressed by the powerful performances (the scene between the two sisters will never leave my mind).

common theme of the middle class director, Ken Loach depicting illegal immigration rights and unions. Starring Pilar Padilla as Maya employed as a maid at a high class hotel crossing paths with Sam (Adrien Brody) attempting to form an union within the janitor workers of the hotel.

Very well documented by Loach, really enjoyed it and got me revising what I could do to improve worker's lives. Not easy being an immigrant. doing the least well paid jobs. I'd have loved seeing more of Rosa, great actress. Sam on the contrary was a bit boring.
