Along with Grouch,Fields is my hero. They prick the pomposity balloon with their razor sharp wit and their quotes are now stuff of legends. You really cannot describe a Fields plot line-there 'aint none!..Ogg Oggleby...his spat with his 'family'at the start...Godfrey Daniel!(Fields way of getting around censorship)...his saloon dialogue...the car chase(apart from the rear projection)that's every bit as good as Bullitt,et al.

Most W.C. Fields fans seem to favor "It's a Gift" as his best film, but I've always liked "The Band Dick." I'm not sure what's drawn me to this one, but I've always loved Fields' blowhard character in this one. In this film, drunk family man Fields manages to brag his way into a bank guard job. There's family comedy and some pretty funny bits with Fields trying to prevent a bank examiner from looking at the bank's books. Fields wrote the screenplay too, using the pseudonym Mahatma Kane Jeeves, which is a play on the phrase "My hat, my cane, Jeeves" which fields is actually given by his butler at the end of the film. It's an old timey style of comedy that may not be to the tastes of modern audiences, but for fans of old time vaudevillian comedy, this one is essential viewing.

A genuine comedy classic, with a sterling performance from WC Fields. If you can get hold of it, The Criterion DVD release is sterling.

A hilarious movie with a silly but still pretty interesting storyline. Fields is amazing, using slapstick, funny lines and real inebriation to his advantage throughout the film. The character isn't really any different from any other character he's played, but he does it with bravado. A great comedic sight to behold.
