The Bank Dick (1940)

Egbert Sousé becomes an unexpected hero when a bank robber falls over a bench he's occupying. Now considered brave, Egbert is given a job as a bank guard. Soon, he is approached by charlatan J. Frothingham Waterbury about buying shares in a mining company. Egbert persuades teller Og Oggilby to lend him bank money, to be returned when the scheme pays off. Unfortunately, bank inspector Snoopington then makes a surprise appearance.

I was prepared not to like this, having not seen W.C. Fields before and expecting stupidity, but...there's something about the pacing, the sheer lackadaisicality (which must have been scrupulously planned), the errant detours in plotting, that, despite some stupidity, won me over. Plus, you don't really see alcoholism played for laughs much anymore, so there's an added layer of peculiarity.

i couldn't get into this. i actually kind of like w.c fields. he's different and sort of out there but everything surrounding him was so bland although there were a few good moments. it felt too loose and not in a good way. i like loose very much. but this felt...I can't place a word to it. i can't say it sucks because its just not my thing. I can't even judge it objectively.

A genuine comedy classic, with a sterling performance from WC Fields. If you can get hold of it, The Criterion DVD release is sterling.
