Bob le Flambeur (1956)

In Paris, Bob Montagne is practically synonymous with gambling -- and winning. He is kind, classy and well-liked by virtually everyone in town, including police inspector Ledru. However, when Bob's luck turns sour, he begins to lose friends and makes the most desperate gamble of his life: to rob the Deauville casino during Grand Prix weekend, when the vaults are full. Unfortunately, Bob soon learns that the game is rigged and the cops are on to him.

This is the origional heist movie and it doesn't do it will all of the pomp and circumstance of modern day heist movies. Melville has fun with his characters, but they also would exist in reality. The heist is completely plausable and Melville anticipates aspects of the heist that would be implausable and shows us how they plan to pull it off. The ending is poetic and fits perfect with the Bob character.

This was the film that the French New Wave said that they themselves wanted to make. It is easy to see why, with its location bound sequences, and Bob the anti-hero gambler who just about doesn't give a damn. This is one of the films that started to get the French cinema back on its feet after a pretty torrid decade after the second world war. It is perhaps the starting point for modern French Cinema. C'est superb!

Bob is a gambler, an ex-convict, down on his luck, short of money, but with a heart of gold who decides to solve his problems by stealing a large amount of money from a casino. That sounds like lots of other films so far, but this was charmingly unflashy and didn't end in the way I thought it would.
