Bob le Flambeur (1956)

In Paris, Bob Montagne is practically synonymous with gambling -- and winning. He is kind, classy and well-liked by virtually everyone in town, including police inspector Ledru. However, when Bob's luck turns sour, he begins to lose friends and makes the most desperate gamble of his life: to rob the Deauville casino during Grand Prix weekend, when the vaults are full. Unfortunately, Bob soon learns that the game is rigged and the cops are on to him.

Watching Bob keeps the movie moving at an average pace despite very little action but the ending takes the movie up to eleven.

of the great french heist films, this is my favorite because it completely subverted my expectation of the finale. it has an easygoing style that reminded me of lighter episodes of 'the sopranos.' after seeing noir after noir end the exact same way (thanks to the cinema codes of the period), and after seeing two other french heist films with the same premise, it was a shot of adrenaline to see something that not only found a new tone, but also an immensely clever way around the moral restrictions of the time. this is hailed as a precursor to the new wave, and i'm very much looking forward to diving in.

Stylish, moody and very, very cool. Warning, the film makes you want to do as its protagonist and drink a lot of pastis while watching it!
