Bob le Flambeur (1956)

In Paris, Bob Montagne is practically synonymous with gambling -- and winning. He is kind, classy and well-liked by virtually everyone in town, including police inspector Ledru. However, when Bob's luck turns sour, he begins to lose friends and makes the most desperate gamble of his life: to rob the Deauville casino during Grand Prix weekend, when the vaults are full. Unfortunately, Bob soon learns that the game is rigged and the cops are on to him.

Not my favorite Melville, but this one pretty damn good.

This was the film that the French New Wave said that they themselves wanted to make. It is easy to see why, with its location bound sequences, and Bob the anti-hero gambler who just about doesn't give a damn. This is one of the films that started to get the French cinema back on its feet after a pretty torrid decade after the second world war. It is perhaps the starting point for modern French Cinema. C'est superb!

Suave suave suave suave suave. Ok, enough adjectives. I saw this on a Sunday afternoon at the French Institute in London. I nearly went to rob a casino, except I'm not Bob. Melville had to sweet-talk the mob into letting Roger Duchesne back into Paris to film the thing after he'd got them mad. That's what you're dealing with.
