A musical comedy based on several Damon Runyon short stories. When a bookie on the run, Robert 'Numbers' Foster, falls for a pretty country songbird, Emily Ann Stackerlee , he'll do anything to help her make it big -- including a stint in jail to pay for his crimes. One of the best musicals to come out of Fox during Hollywood's "Golden Age," IMO. Loosely based on Damon Runyon's stories, Mitzi Gaynor shines as the lil' songstress from Georgia who makes good in NYC and reforms bad boy bookie Scott Brady. The characters are delightfully Ruyon-esque, the dialogue's full of Guys and Dolls style zingers, and the musical numbers are bright and colorful and well-staged. It's actually paced better than the movie version of Runyon's most famous tale, "Guys and Dolls."
