Bloodhounds of Broadway (1989)

This musical is based on four short stories by Damon Runyon. In one tale, gambler Feet Samuels sells his body to science just as he realizes that Hortense loves him and that he would rather live than die. In another story, Harriet's parrot is killed, and she has problems dealing with her loss. Then, there is a gambler, "Regret", who has bloodhounds on his trail when he becomes a murder suspect. Finally, "The Brain" is bleeding profusely, and his friends search for a way to save his life through a blood transfusion.

One of the best musicals to come out of Fox during Hollywood's "Golden Age," IMO. Loosely based on Damon Runyon's stories, Mitzi Gaynor shines as the lil' songstress from Georgia who makes good in NYC and reforms bad boy bookie Scott Brady. The characters are delightfully Ruyon-esque, the dialogue's full of Guys and Dolls style zingers, and the musical numbers are bright and colorful and well-staged. It's actually paced better than the movie version of Runyon's most famous tale, "Guys and Dolls."
