After young playwright, David Shayne obtains funding for his play from gangster Nick Valenti, Nick's girlfriend Olive miraculously lands the role of a psychiatrist—but not only is she a bimbo who could never pass for a psychiatrist—she's a dreadful actress. David puts up with the leading man who is a compulsive eater, the grand dame who wants her part jazzed up, and Olive's interfering hitman/bodyguard—but, eventually he must decide whether art or life is more important.

A cast that on paper seems doomed to failure is strangely apt for this movie about 'the process' (I suppose). Nothing against John Cusack or Jennifer Tilly, but one would not necessarily associate either with Woody Allen. Cusack is slightly too handsome and composed to play the Woody Allen character, but somehow it works. Jennifer Tilly is, one might think, too shrill and annoying to be in any movie, but as the stereotypical gangster's moll she is really rather good. Dianne Wiest though is the star, in one of Allen's greatest comedy characters. I strongly considered simply writing 'don't speak' several times instead of this review.

Extremely funny and entertaining. A must for theater people or anyone who's fancied getting into movie making. Every actor does a phenomenal job and I cant remember such a great ensemble performance. Very delightful film with a surprisingly 'charmed' ending. This was the fastest 1hr 39m.

Woody Allen is often at his best when he does not act in his own film's, and especially when he gets in a co-writer on his scripts. He does both in this hilarious film about how difficult the creative process really is. It just goes to show that we all sometimes have to compromise your vision in order to get something finished ... With sometimes surprising results. I wonder if Cheech is based on one of Woody's co-writers?

Cusak is the perfect replacement for the WA character. Diane Wiesst and Cahz Palimenteri are incredible. the dialogue, as in most Allen films is incredible. I think this film works better with Cusack than it would have with WA playing his usual angst-ridden self. I saw Play It Again Sam once in Nanaimo, and that was better without WA as the lead. He's a great director, but he can only do himself when he's in front of the camera. This works really well, and is a great essay on Fame and Fortune... This is the movie that made me fall in love with Diane
