started out like a beast, end liked a bean. some credit for carrying out the relationship to its logical conclusion, too bad it completely amputates the story.

Its still great. This is one of the most bizarre films you are likely to ever see. This is by far the best depiction of sado-masochism I have seen. Its incredibly twisted, dark, and visceral. Definitely not for everyone but what an amazing film

The third act is very philosophical (as well as very disturbing). I've read some of Edogawa Rampo's short stories and i think this film quite successful for establishing the term ' Rampo-esque' in the cinema, including surrealistic touches and psycho-sexual nightmarish perspective that was significance in some of Rampo's stories such as MIRROR HELL and THE CATERPILLAR etc.

holy shit this movie's messed up!!! can't believe a movie like this was made in 1969. a japanese film about obsession with physical pain. i love it! my favorite japanese film ever!
