The events depicted looked over the top, and I was grumbling about the lack of 1930's subtlety while watching the film, which was actually quite good. Doing some research afterwards, the film proved to have been remarkably accurate, with the Black Legion being a violent offshoot from the 'moderate' KKK, and the cheesy rituals being almost word-for-word..

Bogart joins a KKK-styled gang to "protect" his rights as an American when foreigners threaten to steal the jobs of him & his friends.

What a depressing flick. Bogart really show his dark side.

Bogart joining a white supremacist group in fear of losing his job to foreigners is a hard hitting film that doesn't qualify as 'gangster' but it is a social commentary film. It's good, but it falls under the pitfalls of the drama genre, and obviously in the end, about doing the right thing. Bogart is great in this film, and it's pretty nice to actually see the dangers of intolerance and racism in such an early film. Maybe if more people watched it, things would have been more peaceful... huh.

This movie is a realistic, but boring drama about a man who joins the kkk because he looses his job and blames it on foreigners. He later realizes it was a bad idea when he kills his friend. It's a pretty simple story, and Bogart does give a good performance, but it's not all that interesting.
