This movie is a realistic, but boring drama about a man who joins the kkk because he looses his job and blames it on foreigners. He later realizes it was a bad idea when he kills his friend. It's a pretty simple story, and Bogart does give a good performance, but it's not all that interesting.

Humphrey Bogart gets sucked into a KKK-like group after losing out on a promotion to a "foreigner." There are many dated elements to the film, but the message around hate, racism, and their origins are still relevant today. It's melodrama for sure, but it's a fairly classy melodrama. Ann Sheridan plays Bogie's wife.

Bogie tried to play a joke on his friend by shooting him four times, but he just didn't get it.

Pretty strong cautionary tale for its day finds Humphrey Bogart as a loving husband and father who joins a secretive terror organizationvvery similar to the KKK after the promotion he is expecting is given to a clever and hard-working young man named 'Dombrowski'. Convinced that 'foreigners' and 'anarchists' are poised to take over the country, he finds himself duped and trapped by the hatemongers and from there descends into a nightmarish downward spiral that costs him his friends, his family and eventually, his freedom. Quite a different role for Bogie - his character of Frank Taylor is weak-willed, gullible and easily intimidated - but at least he gets wise at the end. The terrors perpetrated by the 'Black Legion' are also quite tame, and are directed at very vague 'non-American' targets. Quite astonishingly, there is no violence depicted against African-Americans, but instead their watered-down wrath is directed at - wait for it - the Irish!

Bogart joining a white supremacist group in fear of losing his job to foreigners is a hard hitting film that doesn't qualify as 'gangster' but it is a social commentary film. It's good, but it falls under the pitfalls of the drama genre, and obviously in the end, about doing the right thing. Bogart is great in this film, and it's pretty nice to actually see the dangers of intolerance and racism in such an early film. Maybe if more people watched it, things would have been more peaceful... huh.
