Birdshot is a slow-burning drama that's mistakenly described as a thriller because it happens to involve shoot-outs, stand-offs, and moments of unbearable suspense.

I finally got to see Birdshot, which was recently chosen as the official submission of the country to the Academy Awards. Not my first choice, to be honest. I?m Team Respeto all the way. I felt that the story demanded more immediacy in its storytelling. I would have preferred a tighter edit and faster pace, especially during the first act. I even dozed off inside the cinema. The couch at Cinema ?76 is partly to be blamed. Nonetheless, the acting was all aces across the board. I?d like to see Arnold Reyes and John Arcilla in another crime thriller. Paging Erik Matti.

Proud to say a PH movie is in netflix. And as usual Red's cinematography is magnificent. However it has the same stigma just like the rest of PH cinema, it falls short of delivering a good story. The opening scenes may intice you but soon enough it becomes a drag. And the huge flaw in the film is the unrealictic actions of the police for a killed PH eagle. In reality it's just a 100k fine. Now the film showcases the police gping all through the trouble of torturing the suspect, all for a bird. C'mon now. Really?

Sad and disappointed that Birdshot failed to live the hype. I'm severely perplexed at how it manages to overdo and underwhelm at the same time. Even with two simple loose narratives, the film suffers from divided attention. It was built upon premises that were left unresolved and sadly unmaximized. The somber tones and weak suspense do not help at all. Overall, Birdshot tried to aim for everything but completely missed its point.
