Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ (1925)

Erstwhile childhood friends, Judah Ben-Hur and Messala meet again as adults, this time with Roman officer Messala as conqueror and Judah as a wealthy, though conquered, Israelite. A slip of a brick during a Roman parade causes Judah to be sent off as a galley slave, his property confiscated and his mother and sister imprisoned. Years later, as a result of his determination to stay alive and his willingness to aid his Roman master, Judah returns to his homeland an exalted and wealthy Roman athlete. Unable to find his mother and sister, and believing them dead, he can think of nothing else than revenge against Messala.

The silent film that preceded the better known adaptation of Ben Hur was also a big budget spectacle that saved MGM. Surprisingly, some of the special effects still impress and the movie, though maybe overly long, is entertaining even if the "Tale of the Christ" part feels inessential to the plot.

One of the epic silent films of its day which inspired the late 50's version and many sandal epics to come, focuses on Jonah Ben Hur and his tribulations which start once he meets his former best friend who is now a Roman centurian, and through a misunderstanding is betrayed by him into slavery, leaving his life and family seemingly destroyed. Equal parts revenge story, inspiring underdog story and touching on Christian mythology, ben Hur acts as a tale for the ages. Some of the situations are slightly dated since the film is aroudn 80 years old, but still a must see, with live musical accompaniment where possible.

marvelous movie. The battlescene in the sea and the charriot race are for me cleary better than the 59 heston version. that scenes are more realistic and dramatic: for example see how the horses crash and fall down. please not underestimate this movie the for the incipient efects. this is not a stone age movie: for the contrary a superb movie if you concentrate in the esential not in the surface. peter melque

Despite having seen the Charlton heston version countles times. it wasn't until this Christmas that I finally got round to watching this version. its very good and butifully shot with stunning visuals all round. the chariot sequence is equally as amazing as it's later counterpart. what really struck me about this version was it's interpretation of christ. he appears more frequently but never truly "appears" at all always hidden his face never seen. i found this incredibly powerful as it meant the portrayal of christ belonged to you the individual and not oh look its robert powell etc.. a very clever touch i thought. judah ben hur also seemed a lot younger in his portrayla here and that added a wonderful vunerability to his early fate.

A massive, truly epic film. The chariot race still holds its own as one of the greatest action sequences in cinema history.
