Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ (1925)

Erstwhile childhood friends, Judah Ben-Hur and Messala meet again as adults, this time with Roman officer Messala as conqueror and Judah as a wealthy, though conquered, Israelite. A slip of a brick during a Roman parade causes Judah to be sent off as a galley slave, his property confiscated and his mother and sister imprisoned. Years later, as a result of his determination to stay alive and his willingness to aid his Roman master, Judah returns to his homeland an exalted and wealthy Roman athlete. Unable to find his mother and sister, and believing them dead, he can think of nothing else than revenge against Messala.

Great stunts for its time and a fabulous story from beginning till end. If u haven't watched this movie, you are honestly missing out.

They really don't make epic films like they used to. Not only do these types of films have a vast army of extras, but even though the length of the film may stretch past two hours, it is gripping and exciting the entire time. I am thoroughly convinced that if the Oscars were around for this film, it would have been an easy shoe-in for Best Picture. Now what I'm trying to figure out is why the 1959 version, with essentially the exact same plot, ended up being at least an hour longer than this. Must have been all that Charlton Heston dialogue . . .

I love silent films. TNT used to play this every Christmas Eve, for their Silent Night theme. I love the cinematography and I love how silent movies allow your imagination more space to create the experience. I ended up buying the box set just to be able to have this version.

The Heston version's only improvement was color and a great Stephen Boyd performance. Still, I keep coming back to this version, which still amazes me. What a race!
