Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012)

Hushpuppy, an intrepid six-year-old girl, lives with her father, Wink, in 'the Bathtub', a southern Delta community at the edge of the world. Wink's tough love prepares her for the unraveling of the universe—for a time when he's no longer there to protect her. When Wink contracts a mysterious illness, nature flies out of whack—temperatures rise and the ice caps melt, unleashing an army of prehistoric creatures called aurochs. With the waters rising, the aurochs coming, and Wink's health fading, Hushpuppy goes in search of her lost mother.

Saw this movie yesterday and I can still feel it's phenomenal impact upon my life. Writing A+. Acting A++. Cinematography A+++. Should it win Best Picture? 100%! A really phenomenal movie that explores the balance of the universe. Quvenzhane Wallis blends cuteness with independence in such a way that I cried. REALLY GOOD!

Overall Grade: A "Beasts of the Southern Wild" is a strikingly poetic and original journey, with an Oscar worthy performance from a then six year old girl. This is an unforgettable film and is pure magic to watch unfold. Although at times the narrative seems almost overly precious, the performances from unknown actors are suprisingly great, the stand outs being Quvenzhane Wallis (Hushpuppy) and Dwight Henry (Wink). Wallis, expressing the sheer joy and innocence of a child throughout her troubled life, is just fantastic. A highly overlooked film and needs to be seen by everyone.

Wow. Such a powerful, yet simple film. Quvenzhane Wallis was just amazing. For a six year old to pull off something like this is close to magic. A deep story, with what seems to be a undying theme of forcing yourself to grow up faster than your body lets you. Brilliant film.

Variously poetic, mysterious and opaque, a bit like the work of the African director Souleymane Cissé but without the depth.
