Bear (1993)

Bear (10 minutes, 35 seconds) was Steve McQueen's first major film. Although not an overtly political work, for many viewers it raises sensitive issues about race, homoeroticism and violence. It depicts two naked men – one of whom is the artist – tussling and teasing one another in an encounter which shifts between tenderness and aggression. The film is silent but a series of stares, glances and winks between the protagonists creates an optical language of flirtation and threat.

This is the worst.... best movie ever. Seriously.... redbox or netflix this movie just to see some of the worst acting and worst plot ever.

Of the straight to video Bear thriller genre the cleverly named Bear is pretty good. As far as animal attack movies go, it's fairly middle of the road.

In an idle and careless moment I paid to watch this film on tv. To be fair to myself I remember a film, 'Grizzly' I think it was called, with an 18 foot bear that knew how to terrorize,even if the plot was nicked straight from Jaws. This memory had me thinking that 'Bear' would be a bit of grizzly fun, but it was one of the most mind-numbingly tedious films I have ever watched, the characters were poorly written and poorly acted, the plot unimaginative and unbelievable, the bear too small and not at all scary. The film makers missed an opportunity to liven things up with the potential for an hilarious end with the presence of cake, drugs, alchohol and fire in the car for an explosive ending but no imagination was evident.The best bit of the film is when soeone walks across the screen as the credits roll and the editor obviously thought it wasnt worth taking out as it provided a tiny bit of relief to an otherwise worthless film.

Though it plays with some more interesting ideas in its finale, Bear is for the most part another low-rent, ultra low-budget horror film that delivers neither adequate suspense nor the visceral requirements of the genre.
