Battleground (1949)

Members of the U.S. Army's 101st Airborne Division are fighting for their country amidst the rugged terrain of Bastogne, Belgium, in December 1944. Holley and his American compatriots have already seen one of their own, Roderigues, perish under enemy fire. The men try to rebuff another series of Nazi attacks, but what they really need is a change in the weather. Without clear skies, they'll never get the air support they need.

Black & white classic that portrays men in war in a realistic and painful way. The bleak sets, and some bits of humor, adds to the authenticity of the film.

it is rare to see a film that is sixty years old, and looks as though it could have been made last year. a story about the 3rd infantry in the winter wonderland of belgum circa 1944, and their attempt to hold back the german attack until reinforcements arrive. stark black and white photography and no musical soundtrack except for the constant humming in the background of bombing. won the academy award for writing and cinematography. a realistic view of the war from the grunts on the ground, this is not a slick "a bridge to far" or "saving private ryan" made in 1949 this remembers the war as it was. excellent.

An honest, if not completely realistic depiction of WWII combat. The movie has a sense of genuineness that subsequent WWII movies lack. The movie is not so much an homage to American military might but to the courage of common men to do outstanding things in demanding times.
