Stylishly animated and adapted period thriller, despite rare stirring for the subject matter as the grisly center, while also justifying numerous Batman centered films being made to express how grounded and close to realism the Caped Crusader has. (B+) (Full review TBD)

Gotham by Gaslight falls into the trap of equating adult themes with sex and gore instead of contemplating complex ideas.

My all-time favourite superhero film (Batman: The Dark Knight Returns) is an animated DC movie, so I'm always willing to give a chance to whatever they bring out in my never-ending search to find the next great one. Unfortunately, most end up being pretty poor offerings. But there's a decent number that end up somewhere in the middle, and Gotham by Gaslight is on the higher end of that spectrum in between. The voice acting offers nothing special. Stylistically, the animation leaves a lot to be desired (don't let that gorgeous poster fool you). But it's the story that's truly important, and here Gotham by Gaslight finds enough success in its Elseworld telling to come off with a win.

Good concept with weak execution. The action is basic and the setting isn't enough to make up for a lack of awe and spectacle and weak animation.

Batman: Gotham by Gaslight is fun and suspenseful. A faithful comic adaptation that gives Batman a new and boldly entertaining style. It is among the better DCU animated films. Rating: 4/5
