Barbarossa (2009)

Year 1100. Italy.The Northern lands are ruled by a German emperor: Fredrick aka "Barbarossa. His dream is to conquer also the lands in the Center and in the South so as to revive the Empire that was once of the one Charles Magno.But in the North a young man from Milan has formed an army of 900 young men coming from different cities: the "company of death". This young man's name is Alberto Da Giussano. His dream is to defeat the Emperor and to give back freedom to the Northern lands.

Nice little suprise of a movie, I admit I only watched 'cos I knew Rutger Hauer was there. Very well made (by Italian TV RAI), a little unrecognised piece of Italian History.... unless you're Italian or a Historian.... interesting and very well done.

Holy Boring, Batman. This made-for-TV looking snoozefest isn't worth bothering with. No interesting characters, a by the numbers pseudo-plot, and bad canned music. I'm sure, somewhere along the way, this sounded like a cool idea for a movie. And maybe with more money, or more creativity, it could have been. It kind of feels like the live action inserts for a History Channel documentary. And, perhaps, had it had some kind of factual narration accompanying it, I might have paid more attention.

I must confess I only got half an hour in... Italian movie in English with many actors dubbed, the sound is off... A bit of investigation shows this was a failed Italian epic that burned at the box office in Italy and has been savagely recut into a poor blood and guts imitation of the original. A shame (or sham, or both).
