Christmas 1183, Angevin Empire: King Henry II plans to announce his successor to the throne. Jockeying for the crown, though, is complex. Henry has three sons and wants his boy Prince John to take over. Henry's wife, Queen Eleanor, believes their son Prince Richard should be king. As family and various schemers gather for the holiday, each tries to make the indecisive king choose their option.

This script is fabulous, and O'Toole & Hepburn have the kind of chemistry that makes this art. A brutally honest glimpse at the guts and machinations of powerful, ambitious (not to mention dysfunctional) family. Also interesting historic detail. You gotta see this.

A heartwarming story, because in the end, all you have is family. Um, no... not really. This is akin to a Shakespearean drama about ambition and power, replete with extraordinary dialog and tragicomic characters. Amazing performances from Hepburn and O'Toole, as well as young Anthony Hopkins, Nigel Terry and Timothy Dalton.

'The Lion in Winter' has such a amazingly witty and clever script that only amazing actors can do it justice, and this film version of James Goldman's play does not disappoint. Katharine Hepburn and Peter O'Toole are brilliant, and Anthony Hopkins, Timothy Dalton, and the other supporting actors also pull off spectacular performances. For anyone who has even the slightest interest in 12th-century Britain or games of cunning, strategy, and political savvy, this movie is definitely a must-see.
