Clever, twisting, and full of unforgettably strong characters. A film of bitterness and lonely pride, where people ruthlessly cut and manipulate each other out of old jealousy, and though a throne is the nominal prize, by the end it seems almost unimportant.

Perhaps my favorite movie ever. I can't really say why. Is it Katharine Hepburn's biting wit and sarcasm? Peter O'Toole's crude majesty? Anthony Hopkins' angst-ridden homosexuality? The list goes on and on. I'll never get tired of watching this movie. Never.

Of all his nominations, this is the one for which O'Toole really should have won. A phenomenal film with a literate script and unbelievable moments. It reaches the pinnacle when Hepburn and O'Toole engage in a verbal battle of wits over the choice of royal heir. Witty and compelling, with a phenomenal musical score by John Barry.
