In 1930s fascist Italy, adolescent Luca just lost his mother. His father, a callous businessman, sends him to be taken care of by British expatriate Mary Wallace. Mary and her cultured friends - including artist Arabella, young widow Elsa, and archaeologist Georgie - keep a watchful eye over the boy. But the women's cultivated lives take a dramatic turn when Allied forces declare war on Mussolini.

Franco Zefferellis autobiographical tale about a young man growing up in WWII europe with a group of English ladies. Features brilliant cast: Cher, Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Joan Plowright, Lilli Tomlin.

I'm a sucker for Period Dramas and this is one of my favorites - a real sleeper from 1999. Somehow the combination of venerable Maggie Smith, Judi Dench with Cher seems weird, but everyone comes together to pull off excellent peformances.

A wonderful movie. It is a touching portrait of women living in Italy during World War II. The performances of the cast are perfect, especially Dame Maggie Smith, Dame Judi Dench, and Cher.
