Bank Holiday (1938)

A 1930s British summer Bank Holiday starts at midday on Saturday with a rush for the trains to the seaside. Doreen and Milly are off to a beauty contest, Geoffrey and Catherine are having an illicit weekend in the Grand Hotel and May and the kids are set for a more straightforward holiday of sea, sand, and pub. Meanwhile, the manager and performers on the pier are praying for rain.

A very well made drama by Master English Filmmaker Carol Reed & staring WWII British favourite Margaret Lockwood. This is a simple but effective film about a nurse who delivers a baby & sadly the mother doesn't make it & the woman reassess her current relationship & can't help to be drawn to this sad man. The film is just believable & moves very well...the English films of the war era are just so great & worth a watch.

Although in essence it's a lightweight romantic melodrama with comic elements, it also provides a fascinating glimpse of the leisure activities of various British social classes.

The excellent acting and brilliant direction, coupled with the fact that the plot deals with the realities of English life, give it a vividness that makes it definitely a film to see.
