Odd acting and a somewhat misleading title but still relatively interesting

Bert I. Gordon shrinks the base line for size in this yarn! If you mess with the creepy doll maker, the creepy doll maker will turn you into a toy. The title is false advertising...there are puppets...but they don't attack at all...

This is a sort of Twilight Zone production for the big screen, except that the increase in length is not filled with an increase in tension or story. There is nothing necessarily wrong the movie, it just lacks an efficient oomph behind the plot and the terror that should be portrayed, probably due to a lack in budget and solid writing. A contrived plot is still better than some, and so fun to watch if you donâ??t expect much.

For a movie by Mr. B.I.G., it's not all that bad. The actors, especially Hoyt, work very well and give life to the characters. Instead of relying on back projections for effects, much of the film features giant sets (some of the best I've seen since The Devil-Doll) The editing between shots of Mr. Franz and his "puppets" is well done and helps the illusion that they are conversing to one another. If you think complementing such a simple editing technique is faint praise, then you've never seen an AIP film. For those who have, and may be fans, this will be a treat.
