A rare treat - a study of cowardice in war with no redeeming features. What do you do when your leader is more likely to get you killed than the enemy?!

Robert Aldrich was one of the French New Waves favourite directors, thanks to classics such as Vera Cruz ,Kiss me Deadly and this cracking and brutal war film from 1956. Jack Palance plays Lt Joe Costa,respected by his men as true warrior he has the best interests of his men at his core and will climb any breach in order to prove it. The porblem is his captain Played by Eddie Albert is a vain drunken coward who causes the death of men through his toatl lack of military skill. What follows is a tough and sometimes brutal film with plenty of top grade acting and the usual dose of Aldrichs of thick ear violence. Palance is great as the manic Costa who will kill his captain if he fails them again and although Albert gets the less showy role he gives one of his best performances. Lee Marvin pops up in a few scenes to remind us how good an actor he was ,and although the film is a war film it feels like its had an injection of film noir to darken the plotlines.

One of Robert Aldrich's best films, this dark, grim, cynical portrait of infantry warfare in 1944 Belgium is extremely well acted by Jack Palance, Lee Marvin, Eddie Albert and the rest of the male cast.

It's among the best war movies ever, films like "Saving Private Ryan" and the dull "Black Hawk Down" are dwarfed when compared to these classics.
