Angels Over Broadway (1940)

Small-time businessman Charles Engle is threatened with exposure for embezzling $3,000 for his free-spending wife. Deciding on suicide, he scribbles a note, stuffs it in his pocket and goes for one last night on the town. He is pulled into a poker game by conman Bill O'Brien and singer Nina Barone, but when they discover the dropped note, they resolve to turn the tables, get Engle his $3,000 and save his life.

The film is mildly interesting, in the end somewhat forgettable. Performances are good in a somewhat weak script.

A truly enjoyable classic. I just wish John Qualen's character would've been more likable. Would've pulled me into the movie more. Not being able to identify with an "underdog" main character is an issue.

If you like film noir, you'll love this film. Rita Hayworth is the perfect bad girl with a vulnerable side, and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. is the perfect cynical softie.

Minor B was Rita last lower rung entry before her ascension to the top of the Columbia and box office heap which started with her next film The Strawberry Blonde. It's unremarkable stuff and Rita seems disengaged in it but Thomas Mitchell and John Qualen give their usual fine performances.

A well structured story, although there is some excessive scripting around the plot, which has a fairly good premise.
