Ammonite (2020)

In 1840s England, palaeontologist Mary Anning and a young woman sent by her husband to convalesce by the sea develop an intense relationship. Despite the chasm between their social spheres and personalities, Mary and Charlotte discover they can each offer what the other has been searching for: the realisation that they are not alone. This is the work of a mature filmmaker in full command of his voice, yielding remarkable performances, chief among them a complex character study of stoicism and desire from Kate Winslet that might be the best work of her career.

This film is slow and quiet. There is not much sound in it except for the sound of the dialogs and background noises, what make the film feel very real and makes you pay more attention to the dialogs. The acting in this film is very good, and the characters really feel like real persons! The story was interesting, and I did want to know what will happen next, but with that said it was slow from time to time...

Well, there's quite a bit of fossils, English weather, depressed-looking characters, people treating one another truly miserably, some more fossils, a couple of muff diving scenes and some more fossils. If you enjoy all of the above, this is a movie for you.

Just no. Boring, complete lack of chemistry, depressing and degenerate. Winslet tries to save the film but it's not possible. I was thoroughly disgusted several times and especially at the sex scenes.

While all the makings of a soul-wrenchingly impossible affair seem to be here, Ammonite sadly feels too distant, underpowered and colorless for its own good, as if somewhere down the line, its heart had died and hardened like a fossil waiting to be discovered.
