American Promise (2013)

In 1999, filmmakers Joe Brewster and Michèle Stephenson turned the camera on themselves and began filming their five-year-old son, Idris, and his best friend, Seun, as they started kindergarten at the prestigious Dalton School just as the private institution was committing to diversify its student body. Their cameras continued to follow both families for another 12 years as the paths of the two boys diverged—one continued private school while the other pursued a very different route through the public education system.

The documentary is often fascinating, even as it eschews any kind of traditional narrative.

The best documentary of the year. Hoop Dreams meets The Kids Grow Up, this is a highly engrossing look at two young black boys as they navigate their way through school and into adulthood. Heartbreaking yet inspiring, it rivals most narrative films in dramatic scope while never feeling false or contrived. For people who enjoy movies like the Up Series, this film is a masterwork.

f Idris is different because he's African American, he stands out even more because he has a camera crew following him to class.

Race is raised as a possible reason for Idris’s and Seun’s problems, and then other potential determinants (a learning disorder, illness) are introduced. But the filmmakers don’t engage with these life events and issues: They just line them up as if their significance were transparent.

Doesn't hold your hand as it reaches what it's conveying. It's a difficult doc that plays easy.
