Though by no means an unbearable watch, A Promise is almost as much an exercise in patience for its viewers as it is for Friedrich and Lotte.

Jonathan Romney 03 Aug 2014

The main drawbacks are the grey decorousness of the pacing and visuals, and Richard Madden's unsympathetically flat playing as antihero Fritz.

Susann H 14 Oct 2014

The cast is very good, everything else is boring.

Jordan Osterer 15 Apr 2014

Patrice Leconte struggles to find a coherent rhythm, a problem exacerbated by a hurried running time that compresses some of the novella's more interesting socio-political nuances.

Another instance in which a Continental story has been inexplicably Anglicized, but otherwise I have no objections to the movie.
