Describing herself as a 'street queen,' Johnson was a legendary fixture in New York City's gay ghetto and a tireless voice for LGBT pride since the days of Stonewall, who along with fellow trans icon Sylvia Rivera, founded Street Transvestites Action Revolutionaries (S.T.A.R.), a trans activist group based in the heart of NYC's Greenwich Village. Her death in 1992 was declared a suicide by the NYPD, but friends never accepted that version of events. Structured as a whodunit, with activist Victoria Cruz cast as detective and audience surrogate, The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson celebrates the lasting political legacy of Johnson, while seeking to finally solve the mystery of her unexplained death.

A really interesting look into both the early LGBT+ movement and the life of Marsha P. Johnson, which was tragically and mysteriously cut short in 1992. The true tragedy is seeing how far we still have to go as a society to be a culture of acceptance. Wonderful editing makes for a truly engaging storyline that I've thought about for days after viewing.

In the end, "The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson" never really offers the closure that it is looking for so determinedly - but then, closure is kind of a myth, anyway.

A group, led by a diminutive Latina, Victoria Cruz, finds dead end after dead end in their relentless search for the answer to Marsha P. Johnson's death thanks to an uncaring justice system overloaded with other butchered transgender people. The film slogs along at the same pace as the people attempting to find the truth. Sadly not much has changed. We must pass this film along to our youth. Watch and learn when you hear of the deaths of transgender people that all you have to do is change the year and you'll see, we still need to fight on. And we will. Heroes, every single one of these patched together people like Sylvia Rivera and Victoria Cruz. We owe them our still-beating hearts.

I hope the film inspires a new generation of amateur sleuths. Maybe — thanks to movies like The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson — a wish-fulfilling fictional scenario will come to pass in the real world, and the injustices of history will stand plainly in the living present.
