The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson (2017)

Describing herself as a 'street queen,' Johnson was a legendary fixture in New York City's gay ghetto and a tireless voice for LGBT pride since the days of Stonewall, who along with fellow trans icon Sylvia Rivera, founded Street Transvestites Action Revolutionaries (S.T.A.R.), a trans activist group based in the heart of NYC's Greenwich Village. Her death in 1992 was declared a suicide by the NYPD, but friends never accepted that version of events. Structured as a whodunit, with activist Victoria Cruz cast as detective and audience surrogate, The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson celebrates the lasting political legacy of Johnson, while seeking to finally solve the mystery of her unexplained death.

Joelle Smith 08 Oct 2017

A searing look at how American society treats the civil rights leaders who put their bodies and their freedom on the line for the greater good, this film stirs a fire for action.

Glenn Kenny 05 Oct 2017

Appears at first to take a more macro perspective on gay rights. But it tells a big story indeed.

David Rooney 27 Apr 2017

While the sense of closure that the film seeks to provide perhaps inevitably remains elusive, it covers another vital chapter in queer history, sadly still relevant in the ongoing frequency of violence against trans women.

Erik Anderson 26 Aug 2018

A crucial look at not just the violence against transgender people but the long-fought struggle that trans people have had (and still have) within their own community.

Keith Watson 30 Sep 2017

It brims with empathy and righteous outrage at the treatment of trans people, but with only a vague organizational structure, it ultimately feels scattershot, passionately covering a number of important issues without quite unifying them into a coherent whole.
