Alone in the Wilderness (2004)

Dick Proenneke retired at age 50 in 1967 and decided to build his own cabin in the wilderness at the base of the Aleutian Peninsula, in what is now Lake Clark National Park. Using color footage he shot himself, Proenneke traces how he came to this remote area, selected a homestead site and built his log cabin completely by himself. The documentary covers his first year in-country, showing his day-to-day activities and the passing of the seasons as he sought to scratch out a living alone in the wilderness.

One man alone in the wilderness of Alaska builds a home, hunts for food, plants a garden and is able to survive. A modern day Henry David Thoreau who famously lived at Walden pond. Dick Proenneke lived at Twin Lakes Alaska for 30 years. An incredible story of self-preservation. It's possible to live 'off the grid'.

I recommend this to anyone. It's a good watch and very educational but at the same time entertaining. I watch it whenever it comes on. The man rules.

I remember when this came on PBS years ago. I watched it over and over. So interesting!

It's about a guy building a log cabin. With hand tools, and big hairy balls. It is far removed from the abstraction of being an employee to pay for rent, food and electricity - instead to literally work for a living. His ingenuity and skill is to be marvelled.
