Alligator (1980)

Pretty decent giant alligator movie from 1980, if you are in to that kind of thing. Ramon gets flushed down toilet, exposed to chemicals in the sewers of Chicago, grows to 36-ft long and goes on eating rampage. Only Robert Forster and his thinning hair can stop him.

The deaths in this film are disturbing. The worst thing in this film is the main character. He really sucks.

Apparently, "Alligator" was concocted in hopes of capitalizing on the giant animal trend following the release of "Jaws", also playing on the myth of baby alligators being flushed into the sewers, mutating and coming back for revenge. Like most movies of this ilk, there are lame attempts to veer off into side stories that focus on something non-threatening but in the end, it's filler that means nothing. In addition, there seems to be an attempt at an underlying message about dumping chemicals into the water supply coming back to haunt humanity. Either way, all of it takes a massive backseat to the true star of the movie - the alligator itself. For my money, "Alligator" provides more hilarious bang for your buck than any other killer animal movie on the market. The dinner scene towards the end alone is an exercise in laughing wildly at the expense of others. Better than "Jaws"? I say yes

An undeniably fun popcorn flick that has no pretensions about being anything other than a campy b-movie. "Alligator" knows exactly what it is and revels in it, getting into the gator-chomping action right away with hardly a dull moment in the film. The special effects, while cheesy by today's standards, are effective and fun to watch, and the filmmakers cleverly made use of miniature sets and a normal-sized alligator to make the titular creature seem enormous. Other highlights include a kid being devoured by the gator in his swimming pool, tons of dead dogs, and a few completely gratuitous explosions. "Alligator" may not be the highest caliber of film, it may not even by the highest caliber of b-movie, but I laughed hard and had a great time watching it.
