Alligator (1980)

A baby alligator is flushed down a toilet and survives by eating discarded lab animals that have been injected with growth hormones. The now gigantic animal escapes the city sewers and goes on a rampage, pursued by a cop and a big-game hunter.

I love this movie, clasic B movie stuff. One of the best.

Apparently, "Alligator" was concocted in hopes of capitalizing on the giant animal trend following the release of "Jaws", also playing on the myth of baby alligators being flushed into the sewers, mutating and coming back for revenge. Like most movies of this ilk, there are lame attempts to veer off into side stories that focus on something non-threatening but in the end, it's filler that means nothing. In addition, there seems to be an attempt at an underlying message about dumping chemicals into the water supply coming back to haunt humanity. Either way, all of it takes a massive backseat to the true star of the movie - the alligator itself. For my money, "Alligator" provides more hilarious bang for your buck than any other killer animal movie on the market. The dinner scene towards the end alone is an exercise in laughing wildly at the expense of others. Better than "Jaws"? I say yes

Alligator is one of the best killer animal films to come out in the wake of jaws, sure the croc looks like a theme park animatronic at best (although is well shot and cannily mixed with real croc on miniature set footage) but it's the sharp script, witty interplay and truly good performances that surprise, especially Robert Forsters very grounded, low key and unconventional weary badass, and it has some brilliantly satiric humor, including a wonderfully vicious jab at animal test lab's, and on top of that it is occasionally tense and scary with some very well orchestrated suspense scenes. A gem.
