[It] may be the most ironic statement on the disturbing allure of 50s suburbia that Sirk ever made.

Sublimely directed Barbara Stanwyck vehicle, unfortunately saddled with cheap black-and-white by the penny-pinching studio. Nonetheless a fascinating, affecting dry run for themes of class divides and life as performance later explored by Sirk more fully in All That Heaven Allows and Imitation of Life.

Not one of Stanwyck's best, though she gives a good performance. Not much of a script to work with. Wooden acting by the "bad guy" of the piece. Predictable.
