In the lower-middle-class Adams family, father and son are happy to work in a drugstore, but mother and daughter Alice try every possible social-climbing stratagem despite snubs and embarrassment. When Alice finally meets her dream man Arthur, mother nags father into a risky business venture and plans to impress Alice's beau with an "upscale" family dinner. One of those films like MARTY and VITELLONI, with a small scope and huge stakes, that will make you resent explosions, at least for a little while.

Katharine Hepburn plays a young girl whose family is at the low-end of the social scene in their town, thanks to her father's loyalty to a local business. Still, a young man gets interested and Alice's attempts to play-up her family's situation are both laugh-out-loud funny and tragic all at once. Any Jane Austen fans will recognize the same witty satire of the upper class, and those who try too hard penetrate it.

hepburn, who is so famous for playing strident, brash women gave a change of pace performance in this nice, tight little drama from rko. not only is she beaming in the lead, frank albertson is a rakish, sexy delight as her slacker brother, hattie mcdaniel is a nightmare of a maid and fred mcmurray is drop dead handsome as alice adams' white knight.

Such a silly story but so much fun. Hepburn shows the beginning of her amazing talent here. Rest of the cast is great too. Am I the only one who thinks that Kristen Stewart looks a lot like a young Katherine Hepburn? Maybe its just me.
