Masaki Kobayashi's thoughtful humanist drama features a compelling Toshiro Mifune performance and a stirring, yet ultimately heartbreaking finale.

By far the darkest Samurai film I've seen and it is clear why, the ending is so bleak it really makes you think if you have enjoyed yourselves looking at this depravity of mankind or whether do you actually hope they get to where they want to, the thing is, what makes this fantastic is that it leaves the audience thinking it is all futile, bigger ambitions are nothing at the waste of human life.

Visually stunning tale of a samurai who breaks from his strict social order to protect his son's wife from being used as an object. The climatic sequence in the field, besides having been ripped off by many other directors, is absolutely lucid.
