The writer-director Antonio Campos uses his camera in catatonically slow movements, to varying effect: sometimes it feels probing, at others it looks like so much film school self-indulgence.

this is quite good. i don't think the audience i saw it with really "got" it. or perhaps i'm not the one who "got" it. either way, i liked it a lot. and for better or for worse, it's kind of our generation's "if...." and "heathers."

Antonio Campos debut is a risky and original great work

Afterschool is an ambituous debut for writer/director Antonio Campos (who was only 24 when he made this movie) with impressive technical features and solid performances from a stellar ensemble cast, but its light on story and thematically shallow which brings the film to the verge of pointlessness. It's clear that Campos has talent, but if he want's to fully realize it he'll have to write better scripts for his future projects to compliment his directorial skill.

Antonio Campos' debut feature "Afterschool" is particularly appealing to me because I am a teenager who studies A/V in high school, and I respond to the feelings and emotions of the character, played subtly yet clearly by Ezra Miller. While some may find Campos' slow direction and often static camera shots grueling, I found them appealing as a visual que at the isolation and claustrophobia that the characters place on themselves because of websites like YouTube. "Afterschool" pulls no punches and takes a lot of twists and turns, and many may crash and burn on the way.
