A GREAT MOVIE -- SCARY THAT THIS CAME OUT A YEAR BEFORE THAT SCHOOL SHOOTING... THIS IS A MOVIE THAT ALL LAW MAKERS NEED TO WATCH IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND THE DYNAMICS IN SOME FAMILY HOUSEHOLDS

Brilliant film. Though, I can't decide whether it would have been better if structured chronologically so as to make the ending more shocking.

It makes sense, I suppose, that Lynne Ramsay is reportedly attached to a futuristic reimagining of MOBY DICK, as her WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN (A) is cloaked in a sci-fi ether: expressionistic, imagistic, hypnotic. The color red makes a constant guest appearance, the theme of bloodshed ultimately opened up to raw, psychic wounds that refuse to heal. One of 2011's finest directorial and sonic efforts (the latter not merely extending to Jonny Greenwood's score but also to the haunting sound design, to which I will never hear sprinkler systems the same way again).

To say this is a 'domestic horror' is to rob the film of it's true nature. In fact, the heart of the film lies in the almost taboo subject of what happens when a mother feels indifference to her first born child and the consequences that arise within the family unit. Disturbingly honest, carefully crafted and with shattering performances from both Swinton and Miller, this shoots right to top of my best films of 2011 list.
