Absolute Beginners (1986)

A musical adaptation of Colin MacInnes' novel about life in late 1950s London. When they called it 'Absolute Beginners', little did I realise that they were referring to the filmmakers. Utterly diabolical, nonsensical rubbish that somehow manages to ruin by going off in a tangent at the end. A few well-staged musical numbers but that's about all this film is worth.

Cinematography and wardrobe make it really feel like you're watching a movie made in the 50's. Love the music and the cameos by Sade and Ray Davies, and a great overall performance from David Bowie. And for the most part, a lot of fun, but then it gets kind of serious dealing with the dark topic of a race riot. For some reason, a musical about race riots doesn't seem appropriate.

Probably a case of "you had to be there". First, in the time this musical is set in, at the edge of the 1960s, and then in the 80s, when this film was made. The songs and story just don't work that well anymore, some parts feel entirely pointless and are hard to refer to. With David Bowie's appearance the movie picks up some speed and takes a rather entertaining turn in the last 30 minutes. Still, nothing to write home about. Only Bowie's title song is really awesome, the rest of the music doesn't really stick with the listener.

A visually inventive and energetic pop musical.
