I had a hard time finishing this film which didn't do justice to the magnificent acting talents of William Holden. The plot involving a Union detachment heading south into Mississippi during the Civil War could have provided tension, excitement and thrills but instead it falls flat at every turn. Plus there's a love story involving a plantation dwelling woman who's brought along with the army that just made no sense at all. John Wayne struts about and the production values are quite high but script, ideas, invention, coherence, all are lacking. For a while there is a growing conflict between the commanding officer played by Wayne and the doctor played by Holden over priorities and policy but that, like everything else in this poor film, ends up going nowhere.

Throughly engrossing and entertaining movie. Just enought action to move the plot along, but with pretty good character development. The action sequences deliver 100% and that is the main thrust of this movie. The Confederacy is also portrayed in a simpathatic light. John Wayne is the perfect star for the Colonel. He shows that the Union is right, but that the Southerners are fighting for what they believe is a valiant cause. In LTC Colonel Wayne's mind, he is not fighting horrible slave owning abomination. He is fighting an honorable enemy, who is mostly yeoman farmers and career soldiers. This film is still the only one who actually depicts that relation.

A solid effort from Ford, indicative of his later, darker period. A film without heroes, Ford's sympathies seem to alternate between the Northern and Southern soldiers. The South seems brave, but foolish and undermanned, while the North has a more hardened edge, though not without compassion in the person of the doctor. The dialectic between doctor and colonel foregrounds that tension and provides the central drama of the film, even as Union soldiers flee their Southern pursuers.

"Colonel Secord doesn't seem to understand that the coffee tastes better when the latrines are dug downstream instead of upstream"

It turned out to be more poignant than I thought, very well done war/western from the dynamic duo of the two Johns Ford and Wayne!
