Intellectual, depressing and at some parts hilarious in one trippy package

It was fantastic the first time around and was a joy to watch again. Not only is it based on an excellent Philip K. Dick novel but Linklater has done such a wonderful job, visually and with the story itself that everything falls into place. That last five minutes always kills me too, and after laughing for a good part of the film you are really brought down to earth by how tragic a story this is.

This movie made me a Richard Linklater fan. Being adapted from a novel,the movie goes about showing scenes exactly like how one would conceptualize while reading a novel. With an amazing cast and very trippy visuals its a very interesting watch showing the addiction to a lethal drug called substance D Eventually the story becomes very interesting which is another term for mindfucking. A must watch!

I'm not a huge Keanu Reeves fan, but I loved this movie. Robert Downey, Jr. was awesome in his role, as was Rory Cochrane. The animation over live action method they used to make the movie was very effective and added to the sense that this was a morality tale. But it never got preachy and examined the characters' lives with great compassion. Great flick! Time to go read some Phillip K. Dick!

A Scanner Darkly. Richard Linklater does an amazing job the the adaption of Philip K. Dick's novel. Even though it's animated and can be a little trippy at times, this movie is amazing. Keanu Reeves does a superb job in this one, making you feel what he feels. Robert Downey Jr. is perfect, makes you hate him and love him all at the same time. Woody Harrelson, Rory Cochrane and Winoa Ryder shine bright as supporting roles. This movie all together in a home run.
