Malick has created a war film without a single scene of war, of Jewish persecution, of the thought process that helped Franz hold steadfast. It’s one thing to fashion a film about one man’s blind faith; it’s another to keep audiences in the dark about the fundamentals that made him human.

Unlike his last two films, Song to Song and Knight of Cups, which dithered in a metaphysical malaise, this thrums with a spiritual vigor.

Tim Robey 19 May 2019

A sombre spiritual war epic which surges up to claim its place among the director’s most deeply felt, sturdily hewn achievements.

Often the word is used, but rarely is it every earned - this time it is. A Hidden Life is well and truly a masterpiece of cinematic film-making. One of the most stunningly beautiful and tragic films ever made. The story is of course difficult and painful and sad, but the way it is told...it transcends into spiritual poetry, into meditation, into prayer. The prayers of a saint who sacrificed everything to stand for what's right. While the pacing may be frustrating for some in the audience, you have to open yourself to its meditative, prayerful song and allow yourself to be absorbed. Malick is truly one of the finest filmmakers any generation has had, and A Hidden Life may very well be his crowning achievement.

Diehl and Pachner are both terrific, mastering Malick’s improvisational style and bringing earthy authenticity to its playful family moments.
