A Dog Year (2009)

Jon Katz is close to burnout. He's a writer with writer's block; his wife has left for her sister's because he's emotionally distant; he rarely answers his phone. A kennel sends him a border collie that's undisciplined because of abuse. Despite a series of mishaps, Jon decides to keep trying with the dog, and he rents a dilapidated farm house to give the dog room to run. A local handyman refers Jon to a woman who might be able to help him train the dog. Reluctantly, Jon gives her a try. Is the dog the problem, or the owner?

One star because Jeff Bridges is always a good performance and it was a cute looking energetic dog. For the rest, trash this movie... no story, as things got bad, they got well again without any given reason.

Always a treat to watch Jeff Bridges if one is not put off by another dog movie. Thankfully it was not another trying to be too cute doggie movie but a rather honest portrayal of Border Collie as a dog from hell for the inexperienced, ignorant and inept. Otherwise, BC are bundle of limitless energy and joy.

The ending was a bit abrupt. But it was an interesting look at the workings of a mid-life crisis. Didn't really know what to make of that. Not enough information was given.

I had never heard of this film before, I think it was made for HBO, but gave it a try and really enjoyed it! It's just a good story with an excellent performance from Jeff Bridges. The film follow Bridges who is a writer with writer's block, and he adopts this dog who was abused, and it shows how they come together. Highly recommended!
