Great movie with great cast. Full of glorious cliches - "The show must go on". The songs and dances are not to be missed. A must see rating.....

Camp old musical? Yes. Radical queer propaganda? Yes. Surely the first film to contain a frank, obvious and realistic gay seduction. All the girls have active sex-lives too. You've gotta love the 1930s.

Spicey for the Depression era 30's, this gorgeously made musical is like none other ever performed. Use of forward thinking cinematography, an uncensored storyline, and musical numbers that inspire choreographers to this day, made this a very unique musical among the stereotyped genre. An amazing performance by the docile and demure Ruby Keeler, whose singing is so-so, but dancing is off the charts amazing. A web of romantic entanglements and decidely backwards Broadway politics leads to comedy. love, and pure entertainment.

Hokey and dated - but boy is it swell when they get to those closing numbers! The precursor to the Hollywood musical and to the even more spectacular Broadway musicals of the '40s and '50s. Ruby Keeler may not shine as much as in some of her later works, but this is definitely near the top. A great supporting cast.
