This film looks great and it is edited beautifully. I love how while the events themselves are fictionalized, the actual content is still very much real and it provides much insight into the life of Nick Cave from his family life as a child to his professional accomplishments. Cave comes off as a very interesting person as his views on song writing are very fascinating and he tackles a lot about creativity and what it means for one to try and pursue it. It is an extremely well done documentary full of interesting tidbits on Nick Cave, but it also serves as a great look into the lives of artists and the thirst of creativity that drives them.

There are too few films that try to open the crack between art and artist. This piece is less flawed than many. Poetry music and memory are locked in Nick Cave's life-long tussle for synthesis. Like him or hate him, pretentious or truth-sayer, bad seed or flower, his is a brooding presence .

Flits between handsome neo-noir pastiche and ripe psychological melodrama.

Grant McAvaney 05 Jan 2015

Like his live performances and recorded works, the tortured dark figure and the aesthetics of the film bring together an intriguing three-dimensional mythological scrapbook.

It’s right up there with the best rock documentaries. That is, if you can call it a documentary.
