Žižek! (2005)

ŽIŽEK! trails the thinker as he crisscrosses the globe, racing from New York City lecture halls, through the streets of Buenos Aires, and even stopping at home in Ljubljana, Slovenia. All the while Žižek obsessively reveals the invisible workings of ideology through his unique blend of Lacanian psychoanalysis, Marxism, and critique of pop culture.

Brilliant, insightful, hilarious, irreverent, and charismatic are not enough to describe this increasingly popular Lacanian/Marxist philosopher that is the backbone of the film. Treat yourself to an intellectual roller-coaster dealing with wide ranging topics such as "enjoyment" viewed as a political category, the everyday mechanics of psychoanalytic theory, to the politics of apparent tolerance/choice. His Lacanian reading of Marx is original and by no means mechanistic or what is generally accused of Marxists as being economic determinists. The original score is by Jeremy Barnes (from a hawk and a hacksaw): a musician fluent not only in traditional Hungarian folk, but also in jazz and minimalism. The palette of musical styles alone is worth re-watching this film many times over. - Antony Chum, June 6, 2007

Sometimes entertaining, sometimes baffling and underdeveloped documentary about a controversial psychoanalyst is funny to watch and engaging when Zizek is in a situation discussing his ideas and principles. For fans of political thought with a bit more spice.

I'd be lying if I said the fact the director is married to one of my favorite musicians (Jeff Mangum) didn't make me more interested in watching this. Nonetheless, it interested me beyond that to the point where I'll probably check out a few of his books to see if the attraction is still there. It even made me laugh.

This is a great documentary. I can't see why anyone wouldn't be interested. He's an incredibly smart man.

Zizek is a revolutionary playing a comedian playing a revolutionary. Which makes him worth watching, even in this movie.
