Ziegfeld Girl (1941)

Discovery by Flo Ziegfeld changes a girl's life but not necessarily for the better, as three beautiful women find out when they join the spectacle on Broadway: Susan, the singer who must leave behind her ageing vaudevillian father; vulnerable Sheila, the working girl pursued both by a millionaire and by her loyal boyfriend from Flatbush; and the mysterious European beauty Sandra, whose concert violinist husband cannot endure the thought of their escaping from poverty by promenading her glamor in skimpy costumes.

Wow, wow, wow! This is a new favorite. I loved the acting and story. Lana Turner is one of my favorites. She seems to have the Midas touch. Any movie she's in is gold.

I'm not going to lie - I was a little surprised at how depressing parts of this movie were - the inability to stop the disintegration of the lead. For the majority it was well acted - Lana Turner was excellent. My favourite scene is when the father gets a chance to do his number - super cute! It gets four stars for actually being an interesting drama - high points for musical interludes. Highly enjoyable and a very satisfying ending.

I saw this the other day on TCM and I thought it was a great backstage musical story from the 40s that was just fabulous! It is an interesting look at how fame changes things for someone, and not for the better. Still, it is nice to see Judy Garland sing and act, Lana Turner trying decide between glamor and squalor (not to mention rick millionaire or Jimmy Stewart), and Hedy Lamarr who is in between fame and her concerning husband. Ziegfeld is never seen or shown, and the numbers are fabulous and Ziegfeldian, but I thought he should have shown his face if not booked William Powell asap!

I just watched this and it was actually really good. Now Jimmy Stewart may not have been the best choice for this role toward the end who would you prefer sent you roses wrapped in butcher paper and fed you soup? (And he wouldn't return to films until after WWII with Wonderful Life) Lana Turner is very good-apparently this was her big star turn and I enjoyed it a lot. Judy is fabulous of course-the surprise would be if she sucked. She does have to wear some crazy costumes though. Hedy Lamarr was meh for me-I think sometimes she's really beautiful but often she's just there. I did like her romance with the violinist though. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is a fan of any of those four or to someone who appreciates musicals.
