Zhou Yu's Train (2002)

Zhou Yu, a ceramic artisan in China's rural Northwest, has a deep rapport with Chen Qing, a shy sensitive poet. Taking a long train ride every weekend just to make mad passionate love with him, her longing seems insatiable. Until one day, she meets the hedonistic vet Zhang Qiang and begins a torrid affair, which takes her to another train station, and another level of lust. Driven by the locomotive of love and desire, she hustles through a dark tunnel of no return.

Director Sun Zhou clearly has a lot of talent, imbuing the film with an epic sensibility, but this story just isn't terribly interesting.

Has a tiny little point -- living solely by one's emotions can be a painful time-waster -- but it makes that point within a needlessly tricky structure and with too much time spent on images that amount to pretty, poetic filler.

Sadly, the combination of gauzy photography and cheesy music gives the film the aura of a fragrance commercial.

Zhou Yu's Train is a beautiful but confounding love story about a young girl caught between two suitors. One is a poet (with all the standard character baggage that comes with being a poet) the other is a vetinarian who lives an average, steady life. Guess who she chooses? The film's plot is rather straight forward and the film itself shouldn't be that hard to follow but the way the director organizes the scene sequences is so confounding that the viewer is left wondering what is going on for much of the movie. The scenes of Chinese country-side are wonderfully shot and interesting to look at. Beyond that, however, the film gives you a headache.
