Mystery Train (1989)

In Memphis, Tennessee, over the course of a single night, the Arcade Hotel, run by an eccentric night clerk and a clueless bellboy, is visited by a young Japanese couple traveling in search of the roots of rock; an Italian woman in mourning who stumbles upon a fleeing charlatan girl; and a comical trio of accidental thieves looking for a place to hide.

Funny and strange all at once. This adventure in Memphis is fun for the things that arent said. the subtleties and the ironies happen on so many levels that multiple viewings will caust things to pop. The cast is incredible featuring Screaming Jay Hawkins, Steve Buscemi, and Joe Strummer to name but a few.

Jarmusch's Memphis set film intertwines three stories in a way that Babel could only dream of. The superb cast are wonderful throughout, but Screamin' Jay Hawkins steals the show.

Ah! I like this perspective shown by Jarmusch - the perspective of simple one-level America that is seen by the eyes of foreigners! Great!
