In 1838, lovely governess Elisabeth Laurier agrees to bear a child of an anonymous English landowner, and he will in return pay her father's debt. At birth, she, as agreed, gives up the child. Seven years later, she is hired as governess to a girl on a remote Sussex estate. The girl's father, Charles Godwin, turns out to be that anonymous landowner. So Elisabeth has to be her own daughter's governess, and she can't reveal the secret of her tie with little Louisa.

It is a touching story about th epower of love. It makes us believe it exists.

Not a masterpiece by any means, but still a nice watch. Very sentimental and sappy, but not to the point of wretching. Wish this one was easier to find on home video Stateside.

Firelight is magical. The lighting was amazing and it was well directed with an intriguing script. An erotic romance filled with just the right dose of passion- a rare find.

Sophie Marceau, my fave French actress so far. However, this film is kind of dull. I dun understand why this film is so highly praised. The only thing I love in this film, is the Lakehouse. It looks exactly like what I dreamt of! You see, there isn't much to comment about, and I had to talk about the lakehouse! 2 stars is enough for it.

Yowza! What a sexy movie! It's ridiculous and over-the-top. No self-respecting serious cinephile will admit to watching this smoldering hormonal romantic period fantasy. The ending is a bit abrupt and too neat. There are several things that make no sense. There are holes everywhere. Everything in this movie existed with the sole purpose of making silly romantics swoon. I LOVED IT. Sexy, romantic, and absurd. I swooned the entire time. Sophie Marceau is an absolute goddess, and Stephan Dillane did a good job delivering the pained tortured romantic lead. Good chemistry between these two.
